• The Child Protection Investigator (CPI): Overview


    • Investigates reports of child abuse and neglect made to and accepted by the State's Central Registry (“SCR”), more commonly known as the Department of Children and Family Services (“DCFS”) Hotline.
    • Determines, along with supervisor, whether a report will be "indicated" or "unfounded".
    • Takes protective custody of minor(s), if necessary.
    • Refers the family for community-based services or court petition, if necessary.
    • Testifies in court at the Shelter Care Hearing/Temporary Custody Hearing and Adjudication Hearing.

    What is a DCFS Investigator?


    • Investigate hotline allegations.
    • Following the conclusion of an investigation, if a child is removed from home, the case is then handed off to a child welfare specialist, also known as a caseworker.
